Kikkawa Tsuneie
Head of the Iwami Kikkawa, a great family of Iwami. At the Mōri's request he entered Tottori Castle in Inaba, surrounded by the Oda, as its commander. Resolved to die, he is said to have carried his own coffin into the castle. Hashiba Hideyoshi's ruthless blockade, buying up all the rice in Inaba and ringing the castle with forts in the "starvation siege of Tottori," brought four months of famine that he endured with the garrison and the villagers. When the horror reached its height, Tsuneie offered his own life on condition that everyone in the castle be spared. In the 10th month of Tenshō 9 he calmly committed seppuku, aged 35. Even his enemy Hideyoshi is said to have deeply regretted the loss of such a man.
