His origins are unclear, but he rose to be a senior retainer of Miyoshi Nagayoshi, master of the capital region, and ruled Yamato from Tamonyama and Shigisan castles. After Nagayoshi's death he fought the Miyoshi Triumvirate, and when Oda Nobunaga entered Kyoto with Ashikaga Yoshiaki in 1568 he submitted, presenting the famous tea caddy Tsukumogami. He rode with Nobunaga in the 1570 invasion of Echizen, and when Azai Nagamasa's betrayal forced a retreat, he talked Kutsuki Mototsuna, lord of the Kutsuki valley in Ōmi, into letting them through, getting Nobunaga safely to Kyoto. He later rebelled against Nobunaga and was pardoned, but rebelled again in 1577 and took his own life when Oda Nobutada's army surrounded Shigisan Castle. He is called a schemer for threatening his masters and for his supposed roles in the killing of a shogun and the burning of the Great Buddha Hall of Tōdai-ji, though some research holds that much of this was exaggerated by later writers.
