“Peerless Captain of the West”

A senior retainer of Ōuchi Yoshitaka, daimyo of Suō, called "the peerless captain of the west" for his valour. He rebelled against a lord who had drifted into effete refinement, killed Yoshitaka and seized control of the Ōuchi house. In time he fell out with Mōri Motonari of Aki and attacked Itsukushima with an army of 20,000. But a surprise attack on a night of storm and rain routed his army, and unable to escape the island he took his own life.
