Tokugawa Hidetada
“Second Shogun of the Edo Shogunate”
Succeeded as second shogun as Ieyasu's heir. At the time of Sekigahara he led the detached force along the Nakasendō, but was held up by Sanada Masayuki at Ueda Castle and arrived too late for the battle, a lifelong stigma. Yet as shogun he steadily consolidated the Tokugawa order, drawing up the Laws for the Military Houses, destroying the Toyotomi at Osaka and bringing the daimyo under control, and laid the foundation of the long peace.

Life
- Keichō 5 Late for Sekigahara Held up by the Sanada at Ueda Castle, he missed the decisive battle.
- Keichō 10 Second Shogun Received the office of shogun from Ieyasu, demonstrating to all that the Tokugawa succession was hereditary.
- Keichō 20 Siege of Osaka Destroyed the Toyotomi house and disciplined the daimyo with the Laws for the Military Houses.
