Born to Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Yodo-dono, he was the object of his father's doting in his last years. He lost Hideyoshi at six, and after Sekigahara was reduced to a lord of 650,000 koku in Settsu, Kawachi and Izumi. He grew into a giant of a man over six feet tall, and when he met Ieyasu at Nijō Castle his bearing is said to have put the old man on his guard. When the Tokugawa marched on the pretext of the Hōkō-ji bell inscription, he gathered a hundred thousand rōnin, Sanada Nobushige among them, and held Osaka Castle. In the winter siege the Sanada-maru beat off the Tokugawa, but, partly at the wish of his mother Yodo-dono, shaken by the bombardment, he made a truce and the moats were filled. Beaten in the summer campaign the following year in his naked castle, he took his own life with his mother in the burning keep. He was twenty-three.
