Ukita · Ukita

Ukita Naoie

“The Strongman of Bizen”

Born into a ruined house, he endured hardship in the service of his lords the Uragami. Using intrigue and assassination as well as arms, he removed his rivals one after another, won allies by scheming and ate away at Bizen. In the end he outgrew even the Uragami and became master of the whole province. His cold ruthlessness made later ages fear him as "the strongman of Bizen." Late in life he preserved his power by allying with the Oda, then fell ill and died at Okayama Castle. His young son Hideie succeeded him and, in Hideyoshi's favour, rose to the Five Elders.
