Born into a small naval house of Shima. Driven out of Shima in a family feud, he entered the service of Oda Nobunaga and took charge of the navies of Ise and Shima, closing the sea around the Ikkō rebels at Nagashima. When the Oda navy was beaten by Mōri fire bombs at the first battle of Kizugawaguchi in 1576, Nobunaga had him build great ships in Ise that could not be burned. These six ships, said to have been tekkōsen sheathed in iron plates, drove off the great Mōri fleet at the second battle of Kizugawaguchi in 1578 and cut the sea road to Ishiyama Hongan-ji. He later served Toyotomi Hideyoshi from his base at Toba Castle and led a fleet in the invasions of Korea. At Sekigahara his son Moritaka joined the Eastern Army while Yoshitaka sided with the Western Army; when the West was defeated, he took his own life on Tōshi Island.
