Head of the Noshima Murakami, based on Noshima in Iyo, one of the three houses of the Murakami pirates with Kurushima and Innoshima. Holding key points of the Inland Sea, he took tolls from passing ships and was paid to escort them, growing powerful by sea. The missionary Luís Fróis wrote of him as the greatest pirate in Japan. Allied with the Mōri, his Murakami pirates burned the Oda navy with fire bombs at the first battle of Kizugawaguchi in 1576 and delivered provisions to Ishiyama Hongan-ji. When Toyotomi Hideyoshi, having unified the realm, issued his edict against piracy in 1588, the Murakami lost their power at sea, and Takeyoshi spent his last years as a Mōri retainer on Yashiro Island (Suō-Ōshima).
