This world, where all things change as they pass: I never thought that it was only a dream.

Death poem of Sanada Nobuyuki

Eldest son of Sanada Masayuki and elder brother of Nobushige (Yukimura). At the first battle of Ueda in Tenshō 13, while his father met the Tokugawa army at Ueda Castle, he held Toishi Castle and fell on the flank of the routed enemy, sealing the victory. He later married Komatsu-hime, daughter of the great Tokugawa retainer Honda Tadakatsu, and became a daimyo on the Tokugawa side. At the time of Sekigahara he parted from his father and brother at Inubushi in Shimotsuke and joined the Eastern Army (the "parting at Inubushi"); after the war he begged for their lives in place of any reward for his own service, and saved them from death. Granted his father's old domain of Ueda, he kept the reading of his name but changed the character for "yuki" that he had shared with his father. In Genna 8 he was moved to Matsushiro in Shinano and laid the foundations of the Matsushiro domain. In old age he asked again and again to retire, but is said to have been kept on by the shogunate as "an ornament of the realm." He died in Manji 1, at the age of 93.
