“The Master of Double-Dealing”
From the Mutō family in Takeda Shingen's service he inherited the Sanada house, and after the fall of the Takeda he manoeuvred skilfully among the Oda, Uesugi, Hōjō and Tokugawa to establish himself independently at Ueda in Shinano. In the first battle of Ueda in Tenshō 13 he repelled a great Tokugawa army with a small force and made his name. At Sekigahara he split the family, sending his eldest son Nobuyuki to the Eastern Army while he and his second son Nobushige joined the West, so that the Sanada name would survive. In the second battle of Ueda he ran rings around Tokugawa Hidetada's 38,000 at Ueda Castle and made them late for the main battle. Exiled afterwards to Kudoyama, his cunning was feared all his life as that of "a master of double-dealing."
