Words Mugaku Sogen is said to have given Tokimune before the Kōan campaign

Son of Hōjō Tokiyori, the fifth regent of the Kamakura shogunate. In Bun'ei 5 (1268) letters arrived from Kublai, emperor of the Yuan, demanding that Japan submit, and that same year Tokimune became regent at eighteen. The shogunate sent no reply and had the vassal warriors of Kyushu strengthen their defences. After the Bun'ei campaign of 1274 he had the Yuan envoys who came demanding surrender beheaded, imposed coastal guard duty on the Kyushu warriors, and had a stone wall some 20 km long built around the shore of Hakata Bay. In the Kōan campaign of 1281 the shogunate repelled a Yuan army of 140,000. To pray for the dead of both sides alike he founded Engaku-ji in Kamakura, with the Zen monk Mugaku Sogen, invited from Song China, as its first abbot. He died in Kōan 7 (1284), aged 34.
