Takezaki Suenaga in the Mōko Shūrai Ekotoba
A vassal warrior of Higo who had lost his lands in a family dispute and had only a handful of followers. In the Bun'ei campaign of 1274 he and four companions were the first to strike at the enemy on the Torikai flats, leading the charge, and he was wounded when his horse was shot. When no reward came, he sold his horse and saddle the next year to pay for the journey to Kamakura, appealed in person to Adachi Yasumori, who handled rewards, and was appointed steward (jitō) of Kaitō in Higo. In the Kōan campaign of 1281 he rode out past the Kikuchi men holding the stone wall at Iki-no-Matsubara, and off Takashima boarded enemy ships to fight. He had these battles and his appeal in Kamakura painted as the Mōko Shūrai Ekotoba, which remains a first-rate source on the Mongol invasions.
