Third son of Shōni Sukeyoshi (Kakue), who held Dazaifu and marshalled the vassal warriors of Kyushu. In the Bun'ei campaign of 1274 he commanded the Japanese forces from the Okinohama shore at Hakata, leading the Kyushu warriors against the Yuan–Goryeo army. The Mōko Shūrai Ekotoba scrolls show Takezaki Suenaga riding past his camp to lead the charge. Tradition says that he shot down an enemy general who was pursuing the retreating Japanese, and that it was the Yuan deputy commander Liu Fuheng. He fought in the Kōan campaign as well. In Kōan 8, caught up in the Shimotsuki Incident in Kamakura, he fought his brother Tsunesuke at Iwato Castle in Chikuzen (the Battle of Iwato), was defeated, and took his own life.
