Taira no Atsumori

“The Young Lord of the Flute”

Son of Kiyomori's brother Tsunemori, a graceful young warrior known as a master of the flute. On the shore of the rout at Ichi-no-Tani he was called back by Kumagai Naozane and killed, after Naozane's agonised hesitation over a youth the same age as his own son. The famous flute "Saeda" at his waist deepened the pathos. His death was sung in the kōwaka dance "Atsumori," which Nobunaga is said to have loved.
