Welcomed into Liu Bei's service after the "three visits to the thatched cottage," he set out the plan to divide the empire in three and became Chancellor of Shu Han. At Red Cliffs he went to Wu himself to forge the alliance that drove off Cao Cao. After Liu Bei's death he was entrusted with the heir, secured the south and launched five northern expeditions against Wei. He died of illness in camp on the Wuzhang Plains, ending a life of "bending his back and wearing himself out."
