In his youth the chief of a band of river pirates who sailed under brocade sails, he reformed and entered Sun Quan's service, becoming the most feared assault leader in Wu. He fought at Red Cliffs and Nanjun, and at the stand-off at Hefei is said to have raided Cao Cao's great army by night with a hundred picked riders and come back without losing a single man, raising morale enormously.
