Born into the great Lu clan of Wu, he married a daughter of Sun Ce. Lü Meng recognised his talent, and in the campaign against Guan Yu he posed as Lü Meng's replacement to lull Guan Yu, playing a key part in the seizure of Jing Province. In the 2nd year of Zhangwu, as Liu Bei's eastern expedition approached, he was made commander-in-chief at thirty-nine. Taking up his sword, he silenced the veteran generals who sneered at "a mere scholar," held out for half a year, then burned the seven hundred li of camps and destroyed the Shu army. His decision to halt the pursuit and forestall Wei was equally sound. He went on to crush Cao Xiu of Wei at Shiting and rose to Chancellor. But in his last years he fell under Sun Quan's suspicion in the "Two Palaces" struggle over the heir apparent, and died in anger.
